Hire a car with driver for your safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha, Tsavo, Amboseli and on the Mombasa coast. If you have never driven in Africa, we recommend that you hire a vehicle with driver as driving in Africa and especially in East Africa’s cities can be rather daunting and stressful. The rush hour traffic can be present a horrible driving experience and so does driving upcountry due to pot holes in some roads and the animals that may cross without warning. Driving at night can present challenges as the roads may not be lit at night.
Driving in East Africa generally requires prior experience of driving in fairly complex situations. We recommend defensive driving skills. So if you’re a first time or rather faint hearted we suggest that you hire one of our professional driver guides to do the driving as you sit back and enjoy the scenery and the beauty of East Africa’s savannahs and beautiful quaint villages. Our drivers have very many years; experience of driving in East Africa, they speak perfect English, are punctual, courteous and will respect your privacy at all times. On average, we charge US$40 per day for driver services in Uganda, US$50 per day in Rwanda, US$50 per day in Kenya and US$45 per day in Tanzania. The driver charges include their fees, meals and accommodation and the difference in charges by each country depends on the cost of driver’s accommodation in each country. Rwanda and Kenya have slightly higher accommodation rates for our drivers.
However experiences driver guides usually cost higher especially the birding driver guides who can charge as high as US$70 per day because of their expertise.

For safari camping clients having a driver guide comes in handy as he can also help out with setting up tents as well as chipping in when it comes to preparing meals. However it is also possible to hire both a driver guide and a cook so that the driver focuses on the driving and gets a chance to rest when you retire from safari game drives in the evenings. Cooks charge anything from US$50 per day to US$60 per day depending on their level of cooking experience.
For multi country cross border rentals which are one way in nature, it is advantageous to have a driver guide as they would know all the countries that you would be travelling to in East Africa extremely well. Our drivers usually have more than 10 years of driving experience in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi. They are just an added value asset to have along for the trip. They will know the back roads, the shortcuts, they can spot game in the national parks when an untrained eye would have missed seeing a lion or one of the rare cats, the leopards and tigers. For one way rentals, that start in one city and finish in a different one, it works out cheaper to have a driver in terms of one way rental evacuation costs as we wouldn’t have to dispatch a driver to collect the vehicle at the end of the trip. You would only pay the cost of the fuel as the driver would be returning home with the vehicle.
For some of our rental destinations e.g Juba South Sudan and Addis Ababa Ethiopia, we only currently provide with driver rental because of the risks associated with self drive in those destinations. If you wish to hire a vehicle in Juba or Ethiopia, we will therefore ask you to take one of our driver guides along for the trip.
