The safari can also be extended to take you to the less visited Lake Natron area for an authentic Tanzania safari holiday of a lifetime. The roads in Lake Natron as well as in Serengeti and Ngorongoro, require a sturdy Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 4wd or Land Rover Defender which can cope with the challenging road conditions, especially during the rainy months, which explains why our Arusha and Kilimanjaro 4×4 car rental fleet is primarily composed of the Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 hardtops and Land Rover Defenders.
This safari itinerary is jam packed with game safari drives galore where you get to view plenty of wildlife in beautiful natural settings and viewings. You will be spotting lions, leopards, tigers one minute and get delayed on the road by crossing herds of elephants or buffaloes. From the Ngorongoro, to Serengeti or the dusty plains of Tarangire be sure to have a safari of a lifetime driving away with fond memories of safari capital-Tanzania.
Day 1: Tarangire
On the 1st day of your self drive safari or guided safari holiday in Tanzania, you will collect the rental 4×4 car from either Kilimanjaro airport ( US$50 delivery fees apply as our 4wd rental cars are based in Arusha and would need to be delivered from there). You may also pick up the 4×4 4wd hire car from Arusha airport or have it delivered to you at any hotel in Arusha at no extra delivery fees. You will be briefed about the safari and the rental 4×4 car before you are flagged off on your Tanzania safari adventure in Northern Tanzania.
From Arusha or Kilimanjaro you leave Arusha and drive towards the dry plains of Tarangire famous for its large elephant herds and huge baobab trees. Tarangire is an often overlooked wildlife gem by most visitors to Tanzania. Tarangire has wonderful game viewing opportunities especially during the dry season months of June to November. On afternoon game drives in Tarangire National Park, be assured of spotting a great number of elephants, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes and a great number of predators, including Tarangire’s famous tree-climbing lions similar to those of the Ishasha Sector in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.
Day 2. Lake Manyara
On the 2nd day of this wonderful Tanzania self drive or guided safari, we make an early start from Tarangire as we make the short drive to Lake Manyara National Park.
Lake Manyara is famed for its beauty, stunning scenery and marvellous game viewing opportunities. You will find the largest troops of baboons you can expect to find anywhere else in Africa. Lake Manyara is host to thousands of flamingos. The 4wd rental vehicle on self drive basis, offers one the freedom and flexibility of exploring Lake Manyara at their own safari pace as you embark on game drives in the park spotting elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras, lions and wildebeest.
Day 3. Serengeti
Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari
Today you depart from Lake Manyara and self drive to the beautiful Serengeti plains where you spend 3 days exploring this safari gem of Tanzania. For self drive clients, we recommend that you drive slowly on the bad roads in Serengeti as we have known a great number of vehicles overturning in this area due to over speeding on fairly tricky roads especially when it rains. If you have one of our driver guides, you’ll be in safe company as they have many years’ experience of guiding safaris in Tanzania, know the hot spots plus the dos and don’ts of driving in Tanzania.
The drive from Lake Manyara to Serengeti is rather a pleasant one through awesome scenery. You will get a chance for game drives enroute to the Serengeti. Serengeti is teeming with wildlife and game.
With several parks and migratory routes, you will see animals, birds, wildlife where you least expect them. An afternoon or evening game self drive through the Serengeti almost usually reveals a wealth of animal and bird species. This is, after all, the Serengeti – the most celebrated game reserve in the world. It is Tanzania’s premier safari destination and for good reason. It has the big five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino) plus almost all of the large game species found throughout Tanzania.
Day 4. Serengeti
Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari
A second day in the mighty Serengeti with game drives and guided walks. This is a humongous game reserve and it takes weeks to get a real feel for it, never mind a few days. If you are visiting during the annual great migration months of October and April ,you’ll get to see the greatest wildlife show on earth. Almost two million animals march across the plains of East Africa from the Masai Mara down to the Serengeti and back again.
Day 5. Serengeti
Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari
A third day of game drives and animals spotting in the wonderful Serengeti. Get to see the big five in their natural habitat as they graze or drink during the hot sub from the watering spots in the majestic Serengeti. You will have an amazing and memorable self drive safari in Tanzania..
Day 6. Ngorongoro
Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari
We begin the return towards Arusha by making the short journey to Ngorongoro Crater. The crater is the largest intact ancient caldera in the world, a World Heritage Site and a national park of unequalled wildlife viewing. Twenty thousand animals (including the big five) pack the Ngorongoro crater floor and this is perhaps the best place in Africa to see the endangered black rhino in the wild.
Day 7. Ngorongoro – Arusha
A last chance to see the wonderful and UNESCO listed Ngorongoro crater and its host of wildlife. Following a morning descent and safari tour of the crater floor, we slowly make our way back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, where the tour ends.
For camping safari clients, self drive or guided;
